Pan in the 21st Century was initiated by Pan Trinbago in 1998 with sponsorship from Telecommunications Services of Trinidad & Tobago (TSTT), National Lotteries Control Board, CL Financial and Petrotrin.

TSTT's involvement in the sponsorship of Pan in the 21st Century dates back to the very first event in 1998. A year later, TSTT took sole sponsorship of the event.

Pan in the 21st Century is a long-term strategy to stabilize and solidify the Pan Movement. It is about the re-engineering of the organization and by extension the growth and development of the pannists.

In 2004, the format was changed. Conventional Bands are required to play songs from the contemporary world beat repertoire. The arrangements should be innovative, creative and not done in the usual Panorama format.

The competition is now living up to the goal of creating yet another exciting pan event on the local calendar and justly rewards steelbands for the effort and creativity involved in preparing for such a competition.

Pan in the 21 Century is therefore conceived as a missionary exercise which will unfold a range and variety of music to its audience and through the recording of the music and the show. This effort will be the commencement of the global marketing of the Pan Movement.
