With the advent of "Pan in the 21st century" competition for Conventional Bands, Pan Trinbago had to satisfy its Single Pan membership and therefore decided to stage the "Down Memory Lane" competition for this category.
The competition was initiated in 1998 and was held in front of City Hall, Knox Street, Port of Spain, with the bands who had qualified for the National Semi-Finals having to perform two selections before the panel adjudicators. At this inaugural competition, the bands were asked to play a ten-year old calypso.
The next year, the musical selection was changed to a popular tune of yester-year and the bands were required to play this selection at the Finals of the National Single Pan Competition, which was held at South Quay, Port of Spain. It was therefore optional and not all the finalists took part in the competition.
There was an absence of this competition in 2000, however, with the introduction of judging in the panyards, Pan Trinbago decided to take this competitin out of the Carnival season.
In 2002, the Finals of the competition was hosted together with the TSTT Pan in the 21st Century Finals.
