Steelband is taught as a Music credit course in Canada within the Toronto District School Board. That board is the largest in Canada and it reflects the diversity that is Toronto. Steelband is taught in Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 as part of the Music curriculum and the expectations are the same as for other Music courses.
Next year during the March break, a group of Steelband students ranging from ages 16-18 years will be visiting Trinidad to see first hand the birthplace of the Steel Pan. They will be performing in some schools and visiting places of interest. These students attend Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute, Scarborough, Toronto, and are very excited about this trip.
Could anyone from the Steelband community reading this message, please contact me if they can assist in connecting me with some events associated with the steelband. These students might want to see and hear a big band play or even visit a panyard. They might like to meet some of the arrangers, players, tuners and see how a pan is actually made. Your kind consideration will go a long way in spreading the gospel of the pan around the world.
PS I have a steelband record collection from the 50's to present, over 600 Lps which I hope to publish sometime in the future. If you know of any schools willing to have us visit and play etc. please don't hesitate to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 1-416-283-4152 call collect. Thanks
