A new day of professionalism is on its way.

The cultural as well as social development of T&T is changing rapidly. Cultural includes pan, pan music, kaiso, calypso, soca and all other types of music of T&T. In the cultural world in T&T, an unprofessional mode had been the order of the day. You see, things cultural-meaning dance, theatre, song, plays, poetry etc were done by the simple grass roots. These grass roots had no formal education more than fifth standard if so high in primary schools. Then the era of government assisted secondary schools came on the scene. The simple grass roots kid got a chance to go to "high school". Once there was an Indian uneducated politician who boasted his political party would be building plenty of "high" schools. Yes plenty high schools. High high up in the mountains. He thought that high schools meant they were to be built on high mountains. Anyway, the secondary schools came.
Now the grass roots children received a little more material education, but about the wrong things which did not really apply to them. For instance they did not know how to make steel pans. They did not know how to compose a good calypso. They were not taught how to sell these things in terms of business and so on. They were merely allowed to catch these things any way they could. For instance there are still no performing arts schools. There are still no music business schools. There are hardly music schools. Those that exist and not well supported by governments of the day. So really, cultural and social skills and development lacking sorely in T&T. Yet we claim we are the mecca of pan, kaiso, carnival etc. But behind it all, most operators do not know a thing about the business of music, the business of culture, business of arts and so on.
Today, however, thanks to the Internet, many persons have discovered that pan is big business, carnival is big business, arts is big business and so on. Yet most of us went to "high" school. So the educational system of T&T did considerable damage to the psyche of people. Today we are withnessing how many young people have gone mad and are now killing off other young people and anyone who gets in their way for whatever reason. I has become a mad society.
The way out of this madness is re-educating young people who have already left the high school maddening machines they call government secondary schools.
Some of us are beginning to wake up when we see white people, yellow people, green people, purple people play the pan as though they were Trinis. When we see college professors all over the world writing books and their thesis on Trinidad carnival, the pan kaiso etc.
We as a nation are now attempting to put pan in schools after 60 or 70 years. We have no idea that the music business and things cultural is worth more than oil. Why? the world oil will finish soon. But intellectual persuits live long after their creators pass. We do not see value in intellectuals.
Once Lloyd Best had said that Trinidad is not a place for intellectuals. It was a place where slaves live and slave masters in the form of capitalists still drive their slaves in misery. He also said that of all the West Indian islands, Trinidad was the most backward of all of them. At the time I had a hard time understandinf why he would view Trinidad like this. This is when I was covered with sayings like "Only we kud beat ah pan good" "Only Trinidad have nice woman" "Pan is de only acoustic musical instrument to be discovered in 20th century." De only De only De only. We have a way of saying Trinidad is the only. If you go to an African state and say that about pan, they will show you hundreds of musical instruments they made in the 20th century including panlike instruments. Then they may also beat you on the head with a piece of bamboo. And each time the hit you, the bamboo gives off a different sound. They are not beating to hurt you, but to show you it is very easy to get acoustic sounds.
What I suspect is happening is that Trinidadians are being shocked into reality of the real world. You have to be able to earn your keeps from whatever you discover, make or do. Instead many have taken the wrong path and steal from what does not belong to them.
These intellectual issues will prop up now by the dozens, just to show us that we have been sleeping, fooling around with our natural God given wealth. God is just about ready to give it to others and leave us out completely. But a new day is coming and some of us have truly begun to take care of our real wealth and how to live off of it professionally. To do this, first we must know that every thing comes from God. We must not think that it first appeared in some remote village in Trinidad and it must remain there forever. We must give up the folk like thinking. We must give up the slave like thinking. We must give up doing things for free and not signing contracts and so on. We must do things as if we were living in the US, UK, France, Spain and so on. Because thats precisely what is happening. The world is become one village. I can speak to people in France by the click of a mouse on the Internet. Am I not in France? Sure I am. The body is not the true self. The spirit is. The voice is the best proof of the spirit. When someone dies you can still see there body, but there is no voice. The sound element is gone.
Wake up T&T. The era for foolishness is over. Otherwise we will loose T&T. It will be taken away from us somehow.
