Silver Stars Tops Prelim Round Of 21st Century Pan

Just ten points separate the first 11 bands at the end of the preliminary round of this year’s Pan in the 21st Century competition, which was postponed from Carnival season after three bands had already performed for judges.

One of the bands that performed during the aborted leg, Silver Stars has topped the preliminary round, which concluded on Wednesday night in Tobago.

The other bands were unplaced Belmont Fifth Dimension and automatic
qualifiers Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars.

At the end of round one, which was completed on Wednesday night last in Tobago, the Woodbrook Silver Stars leads the pack with as leading with 271 points for its rendition of Barry White’s "Love’s Theme", just one ahead of the Witco Desperadoes who played "Amor".

There has been a murmur of discontent about Desperadoes’ inclusion and
placing, since the Laventille Hill band did not play in its stipulated
position, having called Pan Trinbago to ask for a deferral to the following night. Sources say the band was unable to link with its arranger Clive Bradley and had to change songs as a consequence.

Carib Tokyo and Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove, the latter playing "Theme from Exodus" tied for third place with 268 points, with the next four places separated by only four points and the final four of 11 bands selected to face N&M Trinidad All Stars tying with 268 points.

The final of Pan in the 21st Century for conventional orchestras takes place on April 6 at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah.
