Minshall's Picoplat wins downtown

PICOPLAT, produced by Peter Minshall, has taken off with the Downtown Carnival Committee’s (DTCC) Band of the Year title, beating last year’s winner Legends into second place with Nostalgia.

Masquerade’s And the rains Came placed third, with Poison’s Erotica fourth, Funtasia’s Encore fifth and Brian Tico Skinner’s National Unity is Hell, sixth.

Thirty-nine bands crossed the South Quay judging point in downtown Port of Spain on Carnival Tuesday. The Most Colourful Band title went to Masquerade’s And the rains Came.

Six days and Seven Nights in Shanghai by Trini Revellers and D Boss’ The Joy of Spring won in the Medium and Small categories, respectively.
Naya George and brother Iwer also ran first and second in the DTCC Road March competition with 27 and 16 plays, respectively, while Ronnie McIntosh’s “Run” placed third with 11.

Speaking on his victory yesterday, Minshall said “joy” was the winner.

“Keith Smith asked where is she or he who would make the picoplat sing. The mas players have answered in full cry. Joy is the winner, not I,” Minshall told the Express.

After announcing the results at City Hall yesterday, mayor Murchison Brown said he wanted downtown to be returned as a compulsory venue for bands.

Brown was not pleased that only two big bands passed early on Carnival Tuesday morning while several big bands bypassed the venue or arrived very late in the evening.

While downtown experienced a lull on Carnival Tuesday, many large bands were stuck at the Savannah. Downtown patrons had to sit for long hours before getting to see large bands, including the winner Picoplat which arrived at 8 p.m.
