Ginelle Winchester is Tobago's Windward Afro queen

By Karl E Cupid, Tobago Bureau Newsday

Ginelle Winchester, of Roxborough ran away with the 2002 Tobago Windward Afro Queen title, copping the best casual wear and best Afro gown special prizes in the process.

Kenrick “Tobago Rio" Andrews of Belle Garden successfully defended the Calypso Monarch crown before a large appreciative crowd at the Roxborough Complex, east Tobago, Saturday night. Rio also copped the Best Social Commentary special award for his lament about the deviant behaviour patterns among some of today's youth in "Generation of Vipers."

Winchester's award-winning outfits - "Earthly Flower" in the casual wear appearance, and "Woman of Zaire" for her Afro gown - were designed and made by Aquisha Francis.

The young woman from Roxborough copped the Afro Queen title from a field of nine contestants drawn from villages throughout east Tobago in the annual Carnival Saturday night show, dubbed Windward "Dimanche Gras" and staged by the Windward Carnival Development Committee.

In second place was Noeline Des Vignes of Goodwood, who paraded in Afro gown titled "Radiance" - designed/made by Bernadette Jack, and casual wear "Freedom" also created by Jack. Noeline also took the best hairstyle award.

Miss Castara, Sparkle Taylor in Afro gown called "Metamorphosis of an African Queen," and casual wear titled "Princess of Nolinga," both designed and made by Jo-Anne Johnson took third spot.

The best headwrap special prize went to the fourth-placed Danielle Nurse of Pembroke, while Miss Argyle, Asha Frith took the Miss Amity title. Meantime, in the calypso arena, Ainsley King placed second with "Don't Take That Negative" and "Love Conquers All" with Roy "stingo" Hercules ("Black Man Rise" and "Drive Carefully") third.

The most Humourous Calypso special prize went to Thilbert "Bushy" Kennedy who certainly had the audience in stitches with his "Naked Woman" double entendre, while Eulette "Darling" Warner, who virtually ‘mash up de place', inciting an impromptu ‘wining' competition in the aisles as she begged for "A Little Wine," copped the Best Party award.
