Boogsie needs blood

WELL WISHERS and friends of Petrotrin Phase 11 Pan Groove musical director Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, who underwent olon surgery on Tuesday, are being asked to donate blood to the popular pannist by going to the Blood Bank on Upper Charlotte Street (next to the Port of Spain General Hospital).
Diabetics, persons who have recently undergone surgery or dental care or are on certain types of medication, will not be allowed to give blood. Donors who qualify must specify that the blood is for Boogsie Sharpe.
They too will be screened before making the contribution.
Although attending doctors at the St. Clair Medical Centre are happy with the outcome of Sharpe's surgery, they remain optimistic but cautious, according to Nikki Borde, care-giver and mother of his 15-month-old baby, Ashley (who is also currently unwell).
Speaking yesterday to the Express, Borde, who signed authorisation papers for Shapare's surgery, said: "The doctors had described the operation as a 'life and death' situation. They said straight up that they could not promise he would live through it and afterward were waiting to see how he managed during intensive care, but they are happy with how everything turned out."
Borde said, as she understood it, Sharpe's diabetes (of which he was unaware) caused a major colon infection and part of it had to be removed. He is still considered critical and is breathing through a respirator so they have asked that no visitors come to see him, as he may become agitated.
Borde said she hoped his friends would understand and await clearance from doctors at St. Clair.
