ROSES FROM THE SOUTH
by
Jesse Andrews "Pan Poet"When Pan Competition was just borning
And the Pan Spirit was moving about
Ebonites was Morvant's pride and joy
With "Roses from the South"
In those days Ebonites was a big name
And any old-time Tess could bear this out,
Ebonites Steelband take Trinidad by storm
With "Roses from the South"When the Lady Young Road was 'de Yankee Road'
And school teachers used to beat and clout
Ebonites was sharing licks like peas
With "Roses from the South"
In those days standpipes were community showers
And a 'dat-one' was used to brush mouth
And Ebonites panyard was 'Spongy' and clean
With "Roses from the South"When a double feature was only 10 cents
And Pit was the stinkest place to hang out
Ebonites was drawing big, big crowds
With "Roses from the South"
In those days badjohns had gold teeth
And bounced about in tight pants with gun mouth
And Ebonites' saga boys were cutting style
With "Roses from the South"When the Fish Market was on George Street
And the whole place smell like fish and pig snout
Ebonites' music was like manna from above
With "Roses from the South"
In those days transportation was top class
And trains headed to Arima and down South
And Ebonites Steelband traveled far and wide
With "Roses from the South."Taken from the book "PORT OF PAN" by Jesse Andrews.
Jesse Andrews "pan poet" was born and grew up in Morvant in the days when the Lady Young Road was called "de Yankee Road"
