Steelpan playing, good teaching tool

There is a tendency amongst parents and teachers when children are approaching SEA and CXC Examinations to stop their children from most extra-curricular activities, especially pan. However, steelpan playing has proven to be an excellent teaching tool. Most children who play pan excel or at least do well academically. Playing pan helps rather than hinders their development.
Steelpan playing helps children to focus, concentrate and understand the need for repetition ie doing one exercise over and over to get it right. Steelpan playing also helps in understanding methodology and gives coordination because of the interplay of brain, hands, ear and eye.
All students who remained with pan have done well, whereas, those who stopped because of exams didn’t do as well.
The principal of La Horquetta North Government Primary School, Mrs Sue Knox and the Acting Principal of Mucurapo Boys’ Roman Catholic School, Mrs Hilary Ann Brown can vouch for the steelpan as an excellent teaching tool. All the students at La Horquetta North who continued with pan throughout, passed for their first choice school. The teachers at Mucurapo Boys’ RC had given up on some students. After attending pan music classes for just one term, these same students not only learned to play well and had good self-esteem, but their academic work had improved tremendously.
Please let the children play their pan without interruption.
