Pan in the 21st Century &
Down Memory Lane 2006 Preliminary Results

Staff Article
April 27, 2006

The theme of this year's TSTT Pan in the 21st Century/Down Memory Lane is 'The Art of Pan', and the artistry of the steelpan was on display at the various pan yards around Trinidad and Tobago over the past two weeks. The final band to compete in this preliminary round of competition was HCL Valley Harps; they performed around 10pm last night, 26th April, 2006.

Angostura Woodbrook Playboyz scored the most points in the preliminary round of the Pan Down Memory Lane Competition to top all in the Single Pan Competition. They played "Walk On By", which was arranged by Pelham Goddard.

They were seven points clear of the second place Ice Water Ensemble (253). Two bands tied for third spot with 252 points; Harlem Syncopators and Arima Marsicans.

The defending Single Pan Band Champion, La Horquetta Pan Groove placed fifth with (251). They played "I'm In A Dancing Mood".

Meanwhile, in the Pan in the 21st Century Category, defending champions Despers (playing a Keith Saledo‘s arrangement of "So Sick") scored 274, and edged All Stars by one point for the first position in their preliminary competition. All Stars tune of choice was "Black Orpheus", arranged by Neville Jules and Terry Demas. They were followed by Renegades who scored 272 with an exciting Jit Samaroo’s rendition of "All Night Long". Three bands tied for fourth place with 265 points, PCS Starlift, Deltones and Tropical Angel Harps.

Thirteen single pan bands and twelve conventional bands move into the finals which takes place at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, on Saturday, 29th April, 2006. The bands drew for positions today; ironically the Valley Harps Steel Orchestra, who performed last in the preliminaries will again be performing last in the finals.
