For the preliminary round of the Pan in the 21st Century 2K6 Competition, bands were judged as in previous years, in their communities. We interviewed some of the key people within the bands about the competition, their history and other activities in the steelband arena. We spoke with Mr. Henry Bernard, Captain of Melodians.

TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Bernard, how long have you been with this band?

HENRY: This year will be fifty-three years since I have been with Melodians. I was one of the younger members when the band was formed in 1953.

TRINBAGOPAN: How has the experience been for you from 1953 to now?

HENRY: The experience was very good because we always liked the Steelband Music. Our mother and father always supported us with the Steelband Music.

TRINBAGOPAN: What is the band tune of choice for this year's competition?

HENRY: The band will be performing "Rains in Africa".

TRINBAGOPAN: Who did the arrangement?

HENRY: The arrangement was done by Terrance B. J. Marcelle.

TRINBAGOPAN: How has this year been for you so far?

HENRY: This year was not good because we didn't make the semi-finals. However, we went on the road for Carnival. We won the Bomb Competition in Arima and placed third in the Bomb Competition in Arouca.

TRINBAGOPAN: Do you have any last words?

HENRY: Well, right now we have about ten to fifteen children from a home in Malaba we are teaching right now. Four of them will be performing with the band for this competition.

TRINBAGOPAN: Thank you.
