Interview Recorded: April 21, 2006

For the preliminary round of the Pan Down Memory Lane 2K6 Competition, bands were judged, as in previous years, in their communities. We interviewed some of the key people within the bands about the competition, their history and other activities in the steelband arena. We spoke with Mr. Lionel Garcia, Captain and Pelham Goddard, Arranger of Woodbrook Playboyz.

TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Garcia, how long has this pan side been in existence?

LIONEL: We have been in existence about seven years now.

TRINBAGOPAN: What is the band tune of choice?

LIONEL: Our tune of choice is "Walk On By".

TRINBAGOPAN: How has your experience been here with the pan yard in Woodbrook?

LIONEL: It's a nice community thing.

TRINBAGOPAN: What has been some of the highlights during the band's seven years in the Steelband arena?

LIONEL: Our highlight was when we won one Panorama and Down Memory Lane with "I Can't Stop Loving You".

TRINBAGOPAN: Do you have anything you would like to share with the people out there?

LIONEL: Pan is a nice instrument. We have traveled all around the world with the national football team and people appreciate it. The manager and twelve others from the band normally travel with the football team. We have been traveling with them since the start of the World Cup Qualification. We are also going to Germany.

TRINBAGOPAN: Thank You.

TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Goddard, how has your experience been this year with the band regarding the Down Memory Lane Competition?

PELHAM: This is the first year I am working with Woodbrook Playboyz. I worked with them for 2006 Carnival and now for the Down Memory Lane Competition. I do a lot of music in the studio and I print out my music. Michael Lindsey from the Police Band distributes the music for me on the pan. I come and oversee it, drill the band and see how they are working. I was in New York for about a month and I came back only night before so I came here today.

TRINBAGOPAN: What are some of the things you wanted to incorporate into the music with a small band like this?

PELHAM: They have a single bass. The range of a 'Pan Round The Neck' band is of such that it is kind of limited at ends. The frontline is alright with the tenors and second pan, and when it comes to the middles, the guitar pan and the bass might be missing some notes. We had to do a lot of variations from the word go. The key that there is to play in this song is a difficult key to play in because they have no 'B' flat. If you know music, you would know certain notes are missing in a 'Pan Around The Neck' band, so you have to use variations into the notes. It was a challenge, but I got around it to make it sound like what the people know as the song because the song "Walk On By" by Dionne Warwick is from the 60's.

TRINBAGOPAN: Thank You.
