For the preliminary round of the Pan Down Memory Lane 2K6 Competition, bands were judged, as in previous years, in their communities. We interviewed some of the key people within the bands about the competition, their history and other activities in the steelband arena. We spoke with Mr. Lloyd 'Sharkey' Sobers, Captain of Scrunters Pan Groove.

TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Sobers, what tune is the band performing tonight?

LLOYD: The band will be performing "Can You Love Me". The tune was arranged by Steve Neaves.

TRINBAGOPAN: How many members do you have in the band?

LLOYD: We have twenty-three players in the band tonight.

TRINBAGOPAN: How long has this pan side been in existence?

LLOYD: This band has been in existence over twenty-five years now.

TRINBAGOPAN: What are some of the highlights of the band?

LLOYD: We won two Panorama Competitions. One was in 1986 and the other one was in 1996. We also won two Chutney Soca competitions and a lot of other trophies.

TRINBAGOPAN: Can you give me a brief history about the band?

LLOYD: The band started with some guys named Lennox, Holly, Clifford and Emmo. At the time the fellas were just liming by the corner down by Cecil pan yard and they decided to play a little pan. Every Christmas we used to go down by the houses in Cocorite, Bellview and Dundonald Hill to play pan.

TRINBAGOPAN: Why was the band named 'Scrunters'?

LLOYD: The name 'Scrunters' came up because at the time everybody was scrunting. They were on the block doing nothing. They didn't have any money and they were suffering.

TRINBAGOPAN: Do you all have any plans for the rest of the year?

LLOYD: We do not have any plans right now, perhaps later on in the year. Normally we would go St. Vincent, Grenada and Tobago

TRINBAGOPAN: Do you have any final words you would like to share with us?

LLOYD: We have a determination to reach higher. We do not want to stop now, just continue to go further and further. The way things are with the youths nowadays, we want to try with them.

TRINBAGOPAN: Thank you.
