For the preliminary round of the Pan Down Memory Lane 2K6 Competition, bands were judged, as in previous years, in their communities. We interviewed some of the key people within the bands about the competition, their history and other activities in the steelband arena. We spoke with Ms. Odessa Vincent Brown, Leader/Arranger of Is We.

TRINBAGOPAN: Ms. Brown, what plans do you all have for this year?

ODESSA: This is the first year we are using the 'Is We' Steelband. We organized the students and the teachers to come together to form the band to play. The adults in the band are the teachers and the young ones are the students of the school. We decided to enter the Pan Down Memory Lane Competition and it's our first attempt. We are hoping for good things.

TRINBAGOPAN: What is your tune of choice for this competition?

ODESSA: The band will be performing "Unconditional Love" by Donna Summers. I arranged most of it with some assistance from a friend of mine who normally arranges for Worldwide Steel Orchestra. He assisted me because this is my first experience with a single pan. I realized it is a bit different from the conventional. The structure of the pans is different which made the arranging a little different.

TRINBAGOPAN: Do you have any final words?

ODESSA: I think the idea of getting the students and the teachers involved together created a nice bond. We found it made the teachers kind of look out, especially for the children in the band, a little more in the classroom. I thought it was a really good idea and I hope we could keep it up.

TRINBAGOPAN: Thank You.
